ETEC 510 Design
Author: Michele Brannon-HamiltonETEC 510 Design of Technology Supported Learning Environments
ETEC 510 covered the design and implementation of theory into technology supported learning environments. In this course, I learned to consider theory when designing a course for students. This course helped me understand how objects are designed, how students learn and how to design effective learning environments.
In particular, we focused on sociocultural and constructivist theories which emphasized the importance of engaging student s in interaction. Furthermore, I learned to consider the affordances of different types of software and tools.
Discussion included collaboratively analyzing programs like One Laptop Per Child and considering challenges like cultural differences. Also, we discussed constructivism and creating learning environments with authentic tasks, reflection, scaffolding, and collaboration.
In this course, I designed a wiki page on the University of British Columbia wiki site. My entry is titled Blended Learning in an Adult Literacy Classroom and can be found at the following link: Blended Learning Wiki
I chose the wiki entry as an artifact to represent my ability to design an informative wiki page that readers can use as a basic resource. By following the links on the page, readers can find further information regarding several of the terms used and regarding related information.
A second artifact I chose from this course is a Moodle module entitled Online Literature Circles for Adult Literacy Learners which I co-designed with my group as our final culminating project. This artifact represents my ability to collaboratively design an interactive course using the principles of design and constructivist theory. Our Moodle can be found at the following link: http://moodle.met.ubc.ca/login/index.php Use the “Guest” login to access the course.
With the Moodle project, I learned that designers must consider educational objectives, how these objectives might be incorporated into the design of lessons, how the lessons will be designed, possible instructional constraints and how the design will be evaluated. Also, designers must make sure that learning environments do what they intend them to do. In other words, they must watch for design and cultural constraints.
